*Haven’t Made a Donation in the last 5 years? The federal government has introduced a new tax incentive to encourage giving, learn more here.
Now is the time to make a donation if you haven’t claimed any charitable contributions in the last 5 years on your income tax. You might be eligible for a one-time super credit that can almost double your deduction. You qualify as a first-time donor if neither you nor your spouse or common-law partner claimed the charitable tax credit or first-time donor super credit in any taxation year after 2007. For more information visit the Canada Revenue Agency website.
Consider a Gift in Your Will (also called Bequest or Legacy Gift)
A Will ensures that all your assets will be distributed according to your wishes and that your family and friends will receive all that you designate for them. Without a Will, Canadian provincial laws determine how your estate will be dispersed. If you do not have relatives, it is likely your provincial government will receive your estate, instead of those who you wish to support. A gift can also provide considerable tax relief for your estate. Southdown will issue a charitable donation receipt for the value of your gift. This receipt can be used to offset income tax owing by your estate. Bequests can be in the form of cash, real estate, securities, tangible personal property or other assets. Leaving a gift in your Will to Southdown is a wonderful way to continue to support programs that assist with our mission of bringing Healthy Leaders to a Healthy Church.
We encourage you to seek advice from a qualified estate lawyer to ensure that a gift is set up in the most appropriate way. If you already have a will, an amendment can be added to designate a gift. Contact your legal advisor for more information.
